The Mandalorian Thoughts

I have been enjoying The Mandalorian episodes as well as The Mindalorian. It's really weird listening to the guys in a longer format. I tend to break up the episodes into a couple of chunks while I work.

The thing that is weird about the show, with the exception of Chapter 3 when he gets the armor upgrade, is that the episodes could be played in any order. I don't know if I like that or not. I think the inclusion of a main villain would give the show a cohesive feel. I get the "one-shot" style of storytelling on classic network television, but for a streaming service it doesn't make much sense to me.

All in all I like the show, but I don't know if I will do too much rewatching. It feels really disposable. There needs to be something more hearty. The character isn't very interesting. I don't feel like there is an arc or interesting motivation to his story.

Time will tell.

Star Wars was always based on a few genres, Samurai Films, Westerns and Saturday Matinee Serials ... and I always wanted Star Wars to be a Saturday Morning Serial, because of my love for the Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon. This show had the opportunity to be that, but they've turned it into a procedural show. I like what I see, but I really want those fun cliffhangers from the 30s and 40s. Sure the show and character is "badass", but I want it to be more fun. I can't wait for Taika Waititi's episode, because if he does this story like he did Thor: Ragnarok, it could be the exact tone I am looking for.

From how I've watched so far, there are just small and somewhat vague developments that make it necessary to see them in order. For example, we kept wondering about the tracking fobs from Ep. 1, how many were out there, and then that was answered. We wondered if he was truly Mandalorian by birth or by adoption, and we got that answer by Ep. 3. One COULD watch them out of order (my sister saw Ep. 4 without seeing anything else - and she asked lots of questions about what came before), but I think mostly, you want that knowledge from prior episodes to follow. There is memory of prior incidents, carry over elements...a narrative structure like a book ("Chapters"), but going back and watching randomly is fun now.

I've been thinking about something that was mentioned on the latest Mindalorian podcast that frames the show like a typical 70s TV series, and that clicked with me.

Now I want it to have a cool opening theme song with snippets of previous episodes/tomfoolery from the set, ala Magnum PI.

I'm really, really enjoying how simple the TV show is. I keep wanting to describe as being really good fast food, and, honestly, that's kind of all I want out of a SW bounty hunter TV series.

First & fifth episodes have been my favorites so far (5 aired at this writing). Both have Filoni involvement; so that's a connection. The Tatooine call-backs were fun even though I felt like it's filling in blanks that are better left for fans to imagine for themselves. I think I consider everything after the OT to be Expanded Universe & What If type stories or Legends if you prefer. It's not that I have a particular head canon, but that the OT is my Ur-Text. I'm enjoying the Mandalorian overall & not taking it too seriously.
The Mindalorian has been fun, too. I like that there is not a lot of speculation about future plot and what there is is clearly meant to be humorous. I personally don't like SW podcasts that want to figure out the story before we get to see it for ourselves onscreen. Mindalorian does a nice job walking that line.

That's how I feel about SWM and Star Wars. Don't get-a me wrongo, I love Star Wars, but I really really love this podcast.

I'm weird in that I really enjoyed Sanctuary and the pilot nearly turned me off to the series.
