Didn't Pete and Alex say something about "maybe the guns are just bad" and then they realized "but then why did Han, Luke, and Leia have such good aim after taking the stormtroopers' guns?

In Star Wars, the troopers are under orders to let the Rebels escape so that Leia will lead the Death Star back to their base. "They let us go. It's the only explanation for the ease of our escape." By itself, Star Wars does a lot to subvert the tropes it's based on.

It's a shame The Empire Strikes Back isn't as clever, which is how we eventually get to Bill Burr's "I WASN'T A STORMTROOPER!" making their bad aim "canon" (disregarding Obi-Wan's in universe assessment for the out of universe one).
