How do you feel about all of the OT/PT/ST references?

Post by nashville »

I enjoyed The Mandalorian season 1, but the main thing that kept taking me out of it was every 30 seconds there was something from the movies, and often it didn't make sense to me that it would be there. "Small universe" problems.

I talked about it with friends and they didn't even notice because they aren't as into Star Wars as I am, but you guys probably are.

Some examples:
Why does Werner Herzog's place have a Jabba door ball droid that speaks Huttese?
Why is there a Huttese door ball, a bunch of salacious crumbs, Jawas, and a sandcrawler on a planet that isn't Tatooine?
Why does Bill Burr's character know what a gungan is and how they talk?
Why, in a the whole big galaxy, does Mando run out of gas by Tatooine, land in a Mos Eisley docking bay, and walk into the cantina, now being run by Jabba torture droids, and meet a "scoundrel" in the same booth Luke and Ben met Han and Chewie?

What do you think? Were references like this distracting to you or did you love it?

That door droid thing annoyed me. It felt like a SW video game. "Look! This thing is from that movie"

Jawas on another planet is one thing but why would they have an identical transport?

I thought the Bill Burr gungan thing was OK. To answer the question of how he would know about gungans, I guess we would have to answer the question of how mass media works in the Star Wars universe. A question that has vexxed me greatly over the years.

I think the tatooine stuff would be fine if it hadn't been accompanied with so many other coincidences.

Overall, I just remember doing a lot of mental gymnastics to justify things i was seeing on screen. It definitely deminished my enjoyment a bit.

This goes back to the whole question of whether or not Jar Jar is famous in-universe, and if he is, how he is remembered in the history books. He did help the Emperor come to power, so do they think of him as a "hero of the Empire"? If Imperial schoolchildren are shown clips of his "historic motion" to grant the Supreme Chancellor emergency powers in their galactic civics class, I could easily see people who grew up with that imitating him. I was a kid when the Naboo movie came out, and my friends and I talked like Jar Jar for at least a couple of weeks after seeing it.

Plus there's that deleted subplot of the Naboobians being racist against the gungans. Maybe it's just a human thing...

I completely forgot about that name for the movie. Laughed out loud when I read that.

But yeah, I agree about the Jar Jar fame question.

Also, Naboobians are human-supremacist scum. #notmyqueen #WesaNoLikeDaNaboo
