Yeah, Brian is really milking it for all it's worth (and more), I have no interest in those.
Although I'm happy to report that Ella is well into Messiah and enjoying it! We'll see how long this lasts.

Awesome, just started Messiah too, only a few chapters in but enjoying it so far, it’s good to be back in that universe.

After just having finished both sequels, I can wholeheartedly support and encourage your lack of interest in them. Holy smokes are they garbage.

When you say "both sequels", do you mean Messiah and Children?

No no! I mean the two recent ones by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson, Hunters and Sandworms. They are supposedly based on notes written by Frank Herbert before his death about how the series was going to wrap up. They are not good!

Got it. I was confused there for a moment.
I never read anything beyond Chapterhouse. Those first five (?) were all at least decent, IMO.
And now I have one more reason to stay away from the others, so thanks for the heads up!

I just started to read Dune for the first time last month, and I’m only 200 pages in.

They just started talking about “Las-guns” and all I hear is West Side Story’s “zip guns” in my head. Now I can’t get the image of Atreides/Harkonnens as Sharks/Jets out of my head. Paul would seem to be Tony. I haven’t met the princess (Maria?) yet aside from the chapter intros. Who’s officer Kruppke...Kynes? I suppose this doesn’t work, as the Harkonnens seem fairly irredeemable...maybe the Fremen are the Jets?

Also, I expected to hear “the spice must flow” at least once by now.

I saw the movie way back and I recall my mom giving me a poster of Sting in his underwear (no idea why), but I don’t recall much about the story. Still, I hear Portlandia Mayor Kyle McLaughlin as Paul, which is interesting. So far, it’s quite good.

Finished Messiah today. It really picked up at the end and was more House of Cards than Star Wars. Maybe I won't wait 7 years to read the next one.
Yeah, been a while since I read Dune and Messiah. Messiah did not feel quite as immersive. But I do remember liking the last part of the book a bit more. Especially the ending. The final few chapters felt less science fictiony and more sentimental. Most of what I remember liking was how Duncan’s clone character’s friendship with Paul is ultimately what overpowers Duncan’s programming (I know that Duncan’s clone has a different name in the book,I’m just can’t remember it and am too lazy to Google it or care at the moment).
