ABCDTOS Mega Thread

Could also be the catch all thread for all things Star Trek.

I am loving the show so far! I didn't listen to the Devo podcast, as I am not a big fan of the band (though I know they said you didn't have to be) but I am a huge Star Trek nerd (I'm like 55% Star Wars, 44% Star Trek, 1% other).

What are your thoughts on Pete's rating system of assigning each episode a department on the ship? I like it, but I wonder if it's more of a classification system rather than an out-and-out rating system like giving each episode a letter grade.

Yeah, I think of it as more of a classification than a ranking. But I still have trouble with it sometimes, and who knows how long it will last.
Glad it's being listened to, though!

I am really loving this show! I like the way you focus in on TOS itself, which was particularly on display with this week's "bird-of-prey vs. warbird" discussion. The original show (and the first movie, to me at least) often feels like it's in a different universe than anything from The Wrath of Khan onward, and I like the effort to capture that in this show.

(Actually, for all its flaws, early TNG has that feel too; until they change the uniform in season three, I can see that being a somewhat logical extension of the Trek that came before.)

I agree completely. As a nerd obsessed with continuity and "canonicity", the early TOS episodes bend my brain a bit, but as a fan of Sci-fi more generally, I find it absolutely charming that the show hadn't settled on all the nitty gritty details (like whether or not they used money, what the organization they worked for was called, etc.)
I'm so glad the guys are bringing their particular brand of humor and analysis to tackle these "issues".

I started watching Star Trek TOS for the first time this last fall. It took me several attempts but this time worked out! I finished the series and all the films and enjoyed them a lot.

@casinoskunk , after your first run-through of the the films, do you hold to the fan consensus that the even-numbered films (i.e. 2, 4, and 6, usually in that order in people's rankings) are superior to the odd-numbered ones?

My ranking of the films would probably be 2, 6, 3, 4, 1, ..., 5

I liked pretty much all of them. I think that The Motion Picture has gotten a bad wrap. I do feel that the even numbered films are definitely more iconic.

In regards to the Corbomite Maneuver: I swear to you, Tom Taylor, if you had been the reason this episode didn't make it to the 'Enterprise A' category, I would never forgive you, as this is one of my favorite episodes of TOS.
