That’s No Moonraker: Tomorrow Never Dies

Post by stevejrogers »

I know it’s been over 20 years now, but media conglomerates were certainly a thing in 1997, even beforehand!

ABC/Disney had ESPN in the early 1990s, and their radio platforms were rolling out, and I’m pretty sure the Magazine had started by then.

Ted Turner’s and Time Warner’s empire already had its classic movie channel, 24 hour news, sports packages for basic cable networks going by then. I don’t think the AOL merger happened just yet though.

And don’t forget the villain literally is based on Rupert Murdoch, who had
launched Fox News Channel a few years earlier to add to his print empire.

So it really was art imitating life with a “be wary” message, and not really the producers being clairvoyant.
